Turning, Levi notices it seems to be lead by a beautiful young girl about his age. Not staring too long at the girl, he feels the panic rising in his chest as the shop owner from before came into the crowd, wobbling and asking for a black haired brat. With that, Levi ignores the girl for he knows the guards will soon take notice. Thinking to himself, he knows everyone is soon to be gone and that if he stayed he’ll surely be caught. He sighs and figures he should at least try to hide, but not with that crowd. The number of people is too big and it’ll be impossible. It clicks. He will run the same time the railroad car does, the guards will be so focused on checking all the people they will completely ignore him. He walks towards the mob and hears the girl speaking behind him, staring at the almost alluring voiced girl. They seem to escape when the railroad car is about to leave. Levi sees a guard approaching and scatters, leaving the set of people and the girl to the guard’s will. With the screams and the struggling, Levi is afraid to turn back, worry for his family taking over his mind.
Out of breath, sweat plasters his skin as he looks in his house. They’re all there. Even Uncle Paz. Tearing up, he hugs them all and they inform him of the upcoming deportations, that the Germans will be taking 7,000 Jewish every day for two months…
It’s too good to think that he would be able to “leave” in the deportations, before the whispers came like the wind. Whispers that cause Levi to stop.
“Did you hear? The Germans are sending the Jewish into the Treblinka camp! To be killed!”
“Killed?!”
“The Z.O.B. will help us, right. They have to!”
Levi catches the news and freezes. Killed? The Z.O.B? The Jewish Fighting Organization will fight against the SS?
Hope flashes in Levi as he demanded information from the news holder. He hears the beautiful girl has died and anger fills him. Too many have been taken, it had been a month, and many have died within that time. Too many have been hurt. Too many years they had to live in here. The diseases, the torture, the disgusting streets, the starved and the begging, it’s too much. Levi wants to fight. For food. For freedom. He feels his heart usher him to go and join but his mind stops him, the punishment for fighting… Is it worth it?
He’s too young, they won’t let him fight in the organization. But what if they did? He needs to fight! To avenge the girl, to protect his people, to end Germany’s reign on the Jewish. But what will happen to his family? What would happen if he fights?
Should he fight or should he hide?
